Atherton Tablelands

Tinaroo Sunset Retreat is the perfect place from which to explore the diversity of our Atherton Tablelands all within a few hours drive west, south and north.

West to Undara lava tubes, Herberton museum and Chillagoe caves. South through rolling green hills, rainforest, lakes and waterfalls.

North into drier lands of coffee fields, mango and avocado trees. Amidst this north is an oasis of birdlife and the Mareeba wetlands.

The Tablelands is a haven of local, fresh dairy produce, tropical fruits, handcrafts, speciality  chocolates, coffees and wines

Bushwalking

Get off the beaten track and take off on a bushwalk or an organised tour with Tablelands Adventure Guides or Wilderness Expeditions. The region’s information centres have localized information and tips, but here some suggested bushwalks:

  • Misty Mountain Trails, Undara National Park, Heritage Walks at Herberton, Crater
  • Lakes Circuit Walks, Granite Gorge Circuit Track, Jum Rum Creek & Kahlpahlim
  • Rock Walking Trail (via Kuranda)
  • Peterson Creek Walking – Dusk and Dawn the best times for Platypus viewing (not after rain though the rain off muddy’s the water)

Fishing

Lake Tinaroo is the only waterway in Queensland where the normal closed season for the taking of barramundi does not apply, but there are a few rules:

  • It is open all year round however the bag limit of 5 fish per person still applies.
  • As large fish can not breed, the maximum size limit of 120cm also does not apply, the minimum size limit of 58cm does however.
  • Any fish caught and taken during the normal closed season, November 1 to February 1, must be taken to an approved tagging station.
  • Any fish of over 120cm must similarly be tagged.
  • The tagging stations are at the following locations:
    • Kairi Store and Post Office
    • Lake Side Motor Inn

Every weekend there is a market on somewhere on the Tablelands

  • Atherton Markets are the first Saturday of the Month
  • Tolga Markets are the first Sunday of the Month
  • Atherton Lions Market is the second Saturday of the Month
  • Mareeba Markets are the second Saturday of the Month
  • Malanda Markets are the third Saturday of the Month
  • Yungaburra Markets are the fourth Saturday of the Month
  • Kuranda Markets are open 7 days

There is also a wealth of boutique shopping in Yungaburra, Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Atherton.
